Welcome to Rotherham
Schools and Universities
It is well known for its popular well-regarded Schools and Colleges such as Thomas Rotherham College, Wickersley School and Sports College, and Flanderwell Primary School. Rotherham also now has its own University, named ‘University Centre Rotherham’
History
- Up until the 13th century Rotherham had a population of a few hundred and around 1740 the Iron Industry boomed, with Rotherham having a canal reaching its centre, it was then able to transport coal for the iron industry. As of May 2022, the population now reaches 264,984.
- Since 1207 it has had a market charter status which was granted by King John, the market still operates now having an indoor and outdoor market.
- Thomas Rotherham College wasn’t always a College, going back to 1483 its origins were a Grammar School for boys. Sir Thomas Rotherham became Archbishop of York eventually, starting as a local scholar he decided to open the Grammar School for Boys.
Landmarks
- Rotherham’s historic Chapel of our Lady on the bridge was built in 1483 and is one of 3 of its kind in the country. In 1643 during the English Civil War, a battle was fought between Newcastle’s Royalists Troops and 30 boys from the Grammar School. The Royalists succeeded and occupied the Chapel. Musket ball dents can still be seen on the wall of the Chapel.
- In 1778 the building was converted into two cells underneath, whilst the Chapel itself became the Deputy Constable’s quarters. For a brief time, it was a tobacconist and a newsagent before a petition by Rotherham residents called for the restoration of the Chapel.
Close by is Rotherham Minster, a Grade 1 Listed Gothic church. This location has had a church present since 937 AD and inside this magnificent church is outstanding Architecture and history. Take a visit to find out more about how the church has developed.
What’s on the Highstreet?
With plenty of hairdressers, beauty rooms, quirky cafes, and authentic clothing stores, there is a variety of shops to go to.
Combined with the development of Forge Island underway, we look forward to the opening of Rotherham’s very own boutique 8-screen cinema, a 69-bedroom Travelodge Hotel, restaurant, outdoor spaces, and more.
